Kindly allow me to raise my concerns regarding the digging of trenches along Kempton Park CBD streets to lay fibre-optic cables.
The contractors remove pavement bricks, dig the trench, lay the cables, close the trench with soil and just move on without replacing the paving and cleaning off the mess they created.
Take Monument Road for instance, the contractor is gone and the street is a mess. Pedestrians and those jogging are now forced to use the road which makes it dangerous for them.
The municipality has resurfaced streets around the CBD and now you have these contractors cutting across the resurfaced areas and using inferior material and shoddy work to close the trenches.
Municipal officials signing off these works have the responsibility to ensure that contractors are held accountable at the end of the day.
