I was intrigued to read a recent article in Kempton Express, Rhodesfield THS to see big changes.
The article gave details that Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has announced that two new schools will be launched soon, specialising in a nuclear energy focus. The schools will have close ties with the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA), which will support and develop them.
NECSA will sponsor two learnerships this year and furthermore, most significantly, NECSA will also be sponsoring two learners to go on a study tour to Russia.
One wonders why, if the national government has denied our country is going to pursue nuclear power generation because of the financially crippling cost of such a project, and that they do not have a formalised contract with Russia, why MEC Lesufi is embarking on such an ambitious school expansion project with specific emphasis on nuclear education?
There is surely a far greater need for the building of more general tutelage schools as the province is in crisis mode every year with up to 40 000 learners struggling until mid-February to be placed in schools.
The needs and gross neglect of children with special needs are even more dire.
With only the nuclear research centre Pelindaba and the relatively minor nuclear Koeberg Power Station in the Cape at present, one wonders why Lesufi has such a nuclear fixation. King of spin and obfuscation Lesufi has surely much explaining to do as he seems at odds with his national government policy.
