Why put bins in the middle of the driveway?

It is not only a nuisance but also poses a safety risk for residents.

FRUSTRATED Van Riebeeck Park Resident writes:

It is Sunday, June 24. Not for the first time since the refuse collection via wheelie bins was implemented, my refuse was not collected on the day it should have been, Thursday.

Today, the refuse was collected, for which I am grateful. Some might say, why should I be grateful, I pay for the service but that is not the point of this letter.

However, there is something that rather annoys me and probably other residents as well. I place my wheelie bin to the side of my driveway so it doesn’t impede my entering or leaving my premises.

Yet, on more than one occasion, the emptied bin has been left halfway across the driveway. This means that, on arriving home, I have to stop and exit my vehicle in the roadway in order to move the bin out of the way, and then re-enter and start my vehicle to drive in.

This leaves me, and my vehicle, vulnerable to anyone nearby with (let us call them) bad intentions.

This is surely all the more unsafe if one arrives home in the dark. An ideal hijacking scenario. It is equally annoying, if leaving home, to have to move the bin before being able to drive out, instead of making a smooth all-in-one exit.

I was given to understand by our ward councillor that the refuse collectors are “trained” to not position emptied wheelie-bins across driveways but it seems either at least some of them need re-training, or they just can’t be bothered to do the sensible thing.

Let us hope that someone in the waste department takes note of this letter and acts accordingly.
