CHARLES from Croydon writes:
I see most residents are dissatisfied with the non-collection or non-adherence to the collection date when it comes to waste removal.
The issue reared its head when the wheelie bin collection system was introduced, phasing out the collection of the black plastic bags, which worked for everyone — the residents and the collection teams alike.

With the current trucks, which have been converted to pick up two bins at a time, there aren’t enough hours in the day to operate such a restrictive system in the same amount of time. Your newspaper published an article titled “How ironic”, which showed the collection team picking the black bags out of the wheelie bin and throwing the loose bags into the truck.
Municipality, please don’t make the same feeble excuse about breakages. The trucks are fully operational.
If the Kempton Park waste disposal management team were to go and ask the collection vans, they would be told that the rate of collection takes much longer, so they cannot get around our suburbs like they used to.
It must take two to three times longer to process the wheelie bins than the loose bag system. The collection teams don’t mind, it is overtime after 3pm.
I offer the municipality a simple solution, discontinue the wheelie bins until you solve all the issues and go back to collecting the loose black bags.
Since the introduction of the wheelie bins we have had three pick-ups on the correct day, Wednesday. But they only do part of the suburb, the rest of the suburb has to leave the bins out day after day in the hope that the refuse will eventually be collected. They have just collected and it is Thursday.
The management team should do a study and provide solutions to the ground teams so they can go home at night without being in what seems a hopeless situation.
The municipality should remind themselves of the mission statement they have committed to:
“Ekurhuleni provides sustainable and people-centred developmental services that are affordable, appropriate and of a high quality. We are focused on social, environmental and economic regeneration of our city and communities, as guided by the principles of Batho Pele and through the commitment of a motivated and dedicated team.”
You need to live up to this commitment you have made to all of us – your customers.
