Taxis on Zuurfontein Road are a menace

Don’t dare hoot, then you get all the signs and verbal abuse.

CYNTHIA VAN DER MERWE of Croydon writes:

We travel on Zuurfontein Road from Isando to Chloorkop every day and it is an extremely nerve-wracking drive.

The taxis have their own law and don’t abide by any other law, traffic light, yellow lanes, speed and other vehicles on the road, travelling in both directions.

They come racing past you in the bus lane and then push in at the front, go through a red traffic light, not worrying about anyone else or their passengers’ lives.

Don’t dare hoot, then you get all the signs and verbal abuse as if they own the road and you are in the wrong.

There is a turning arrow to the right which admittedly does only allow three cars to turn (which should be changed and stay green a bit longer) but they come up behind you in the turning lane and while you wait for the arrow to turn green, start hooting and shouting out the window for you to go so they can go straight.

Also, the oncoming taxis go through the red traffic light from their side and you have to stop halfway into the intersection to let them go although the light is green for you.

They are totally disregarding people’s lives and property. Every time there is an accident on Zuurfontein Road, which is every second day, you can bet anything you like a taxi is involved and people are injured.

Which is what happened on November 7. A taxi went through a red light and a vehicle hit it. One incident out of hundreds. They don’t care about others.

What happens on this stretch of road is terrible. Needless to say, they don’t even obey the traffic officials and yes, the bribes you see taking place is another story.

Please put cameras at the traffic lights on Zuurfontein Road. Block off the bus lanes, which are not being used by buses, with concrete blocks every 20 or 30 metres.

Put something in these lanes to block them. They are not vehicle travelling lanes. Have more traffic officials monitoring the behaviour of the taxis on the road.

I think all motorists will agree. Please do something before more people are injured.
