Total chaos at licensing centre, says 80-year-old driver

It is very obvious that they are grossly understaffed and cannot cope with the volume of applicants.

I am an 80-year-old housewife and have been trying to renew my driver’s license since July.

So far I have been to the licensing office four times without success. Each time there is total chaos and confusion and nobody seems to be able to give guidance.

When I applied in July, I was told to collect my new license in September. But when I called to collect my license in September, I was told I would have to come back in October as their equipment had broken.

In October, when I again called, I was informed that the biometric photo was not taken properly and was rejected and therefore had to be retaken. I was only informed of this on my third visit to collect my driver’s license.

I went on December 12 to collect my license with the new photo only to find I could not drive to the office and had to park outside the grounds and walk a long way to the office.

In spite of the new procedure of having to make appointments for renewing licenses, the place was overcrowded with long queues and total confusion.

After a battle, I managed to get into the hall to discover that the collection counter was closed with a notice saying I should go to information. No one seemed to know where information was.

The only likely place was a desk at the entrance but with nobody manning it. After waiting for three-quarters of an hour in the hot stuffy hall with no one ever coming to man the desk, I could not stand any longer and left.

This means I will now have to go back a fifth time to try and collect my license.

It is very obvious that they are grossly understaffed and cannot cope with the volume of applicants who wish to renew their driver’s licenses. I overheard someone say that January was already fully booked.
