CONCERNED from Van Riebeeck Park writes:
I would like like to propose safety measures for our road, Drakensberg Avenue, in Van Riebeeck Park.
Since the road closures of Blouberg Avenue, the stop sign on Drakensberg Avenue at the intersection of Blouberg Avenue is totally ignored.
Because of this, people coming out of their driveways are in danger of being hit by fast cars travelling on this road as there is nothing to slow them down.
Please can this be investigated and speed bumps be considered. The traffic is very fast now since the stop street became redundant.
Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, replies:
The department conducted a technical evaluation at the site on November 21.
Based on the outcomes of this evaluation, speed humps are not warranted along Drakensberg Avenue.
According to the City of Ekurhuleni Traffic Calming Guidelines, speed humps can only be implemented where warranted and on streets with developments that attract a high pedestrian presence, for example schools and churches directly off the street.
Speeding and irresponsible driver behaviour are law enforcement issues. Speeding on public roads and obeying of traffic rules are enforced by the metro police department. The metro police department has been notified of this query.
