I, unfortunately, have a few traffic fines to be paid. I am in the process of paying them.
My driver’s licence has expired. The licensing office refuses to renew it until I pay all my fines.
I need to drive my car to go and earn an income to be able to pay the fines. Maybe there is a Kempton Express reader out there who is a lawyer who can tell us if what they are doing to me and others is legal?
Kobeli Mokheseng, acting spokesperson for the EMPD, replies:
If motorists wish to renew their expired driver’s licence in the City of Ekurhuleni, we gladly assist them without any hassles. However, it is the responsibility of each and every driver to ensure that outstanding traffic fines are settled [before a licence can be renewed].
If I were [in the complainant’s] shoes, I would join a lift club or resort to public transport.
We suggest he stays away from his motor vehicle until the offences have been attended to. If he wishes to sort out his outstanding traffic fines (in Ekurhuleni), he can visit one of our nearest municipal courts and request to speak to the prosecutor, who will assist him.
