Letter about fireworks has racist undertone

Granted, fireworks may have been banned in certain areas, but to refer to these people as “lawless thugs” is despicable.

WILSON NKUNJANA writes:

I read with utter disgust the letter written by Tinus Coetzer in Kempton Express published on January 10.

What caught my attention was the calling of people who welcomed the new year with fireworks “lawless thugs”.

‘Hooligans’ plague Birchleigh North with fireworks

It is no secret that the majority of users of fireworks are black people, which then makes me feel an element of racism in Tinus’ letter. He goes on to say “these people should have no right to be part of any civilised community” as if people using fireworks are convicted criminals.

Granted, fireworks may have been banned in certain areas, but to refer to these people as “lawless thugs” is despicable as it carries a racist undertone.

This is rather disappointing to read, especially in 2019.
