I really would like to warn the community, especially the elderly, to check their change and slips when shopping.
My mother, who is 82 years old and resides in Glen Marais, has on several occasions been short-changed by one of the tellers at a local store. So we advised her to use her bank card when paying.
Last week, however, she went to the store to purchase a few items. When she got home she noticed a transaction of R100 “cash back” on the slip. Both my parents were confused as to what this meant. They were not aware that you can draw cash at a supermarket and my mother did not receive R100 from them.

I approached the manager of the store. He took a copy of the slip and said they would investigate. They got back to me after a couple of days to say that the CCTV footage was “bumpy” and they could not see exactly what happened but we could collect the R100.
All fare and well that they will reimburse, but what about all the people who have not noticed this, especially when it comes to the elderly who cannot afford to lose money?
