There has been much discussion in the media about the proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme.
One wonders how this scheme can ever work if the existing health system is in a shambles.
The most upsetting part, however, is the proposed funding. This is an extract from a recent Citizen Newspaper report: “The introduction of the NHI system will result in the current 2.1 million registered taxpayers, who pay 82.6 per cent of all taxes received by SARS, supporting the 57.73 million population of South Africa for their medical requirements.”
This in fact means that 2.1 million people will be paying for the other 55.63 million people.
