It’s ‘voet in die hoek’ at new traffic light on Van Riebeeck Road

Please don’t tell me it was for the safety of the learners going to and returning from school

BOB CUMMINS of Allen Grove writes:

Who decided to put up traffic lights on the corner of Partridge Avenue and Van Riebeeck Road in Allen Grove?

Was an investigation done before this ridiculous decision was made?

Please don’t tell me it was for the safety of the learners going to and returning from school, or to control traffic for the few hours when parents drop off and pick up their children.

Safety! What safety? All that has happened is that road hogs now see the traffic light is green, and, to avoid stopping, it’s “voet in die hoek”, in English, “push the accelerator through the floorboards”.

These road hogs now do low flying. Previously, they had to stop at the four-way stop for their own safety.

In the 40 years plus we have lived on Van Riebeeck Road, we have had one accident and it wasn’t serious. In the past three weeks, there have been no less than four accidents at this “controlled” intersection.

If the pedestrian crossings are a worry, put push-button pedestrian traffic lights at the crossings.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
