Not-so-proudly South African from Edleen writes:
I have a dream:
1. Global opinion: That we are known for our quality export products that actually help people outside the continent, and not only for exporting to the world HIV/Aids and other new diseases.
2. Dirty politics: That Government has done something worthwhile for the poor, except to keep them poor, giving them free abortions and grants to buy their loyalty and vote for the next election.
3. Being victims: That we stopped to see ourselves as victims who hate ourselves and each other so much that if we feel we must burn something it will be the local tavern and not the local school or clinic.
4. The judiciary: That nobody is above the law, not even Julius Malema, Zuma, the corrupt leaders identified by the Zondo commission and most of the drivers of our minibus taxis.
5. Police: That every resident is living without fear because a well-respected police force with energy and integrity has taken back the control that was in the hands of the criminals.
6. Health care: That the poorest of the poor and the vulnerable members of the population get proper treatment in government hospitals, health institutions and old age homes.
7. Quotas: That selection of players for our national sport teams is only on the basis of merit, because every player chosen for another reason knows very well that he/she only made it because of quotas.
8. Roads: That warning road signs for potholes were replaced by more responsible signs that read “No potholes for the next 50km – guaranteed”.
9. Water: That water is safe to drink in towns like Barberton and Brits, and that no-one gets sick from eating fish caught in the Vaal River.
10. Electricity: That much of Eskom’s debt was recovered from those who stole it in the first place, and that their power stations’ boiler tube leaks are properly repaired.
11. Education: That the level of education of everyone has increased to such a point that there is, even in the absence of road sweepers, no litter in the streets anymore.
12. Governance: That Government’s respect for the time of citizens is evident from the length of the queues at the department of labour, internal affairs and Sars.
