Just a short letter to express my disappointment in the lack of police enforcement of the national lockdown.
I drove to the airport today [April 3] and had my special permission letter and ID in hand, expecting to be stopped by the police.
I drove all the way from the suburbs, through the CBD and to the airport without being stopped even once.
Traffic volumes are also much higher than I would expect in a situation where people leave their homes for only the most essential goods.
I even saw four beggars at the traffic lights. Make no mistake – this lockdown is making South Africa a lot poorer and it will be a waste if there is no greater benefit to society as a whole.
