Editor – According to the Express dated September 3, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) spokesperson wants residents to save water through actions such as “…ensuring that no water goes to waste and that efforts to reuse water are applied”.
Firstly, it is high time that the CoE replaces, or at least properly repairs, its water infrastructure which sees thousands of litres of water going to waste on a weekly basis.
Secondly, residents are expected to reuse water. This, while there is absolutely no incentive for users to do so.
Whether one takes the trouble to reuse grey water or not, the CoE links sanitation costs to water consumption.
Why would anyone take the trouble to reuse grey water when it makes no difference whatsoever to the fees we pay for sanitation?
Other metros have a fixed and reasonable cost for sanitation.
Why does CoE link consumption to sanitation? It makes no sense to use grey water as there is no saving to be had.

Bemused.
