Letter: Kempton Park motorist shaken after road rage incident in Glen Marais
A woman driver has shared her ordeal after an aggressive motorist allegedly intimidated and confronted her along Rietfontein Road.
EDITOR – At approximately 08:00 on March 14, I was travelling along Rietfontein Road in Glen Marais when I noticed a vehicle in front of me not moving at the three-way stop at the corner of Rietfontein and Jacobus roads.
Traffic was light at the time. Upon closer observation, it appeared that the driver was distracted, seemingly focused on his cellphone rather than proceeding when it was safe to do so.
I decided to drive past the vehicle.
This appeared to anger the driver, who then sped past me and suddenly applied his brakes, forcing me to brake abruptly to avoid colliding with his white Isuzu bakkie.

At the next three-way stop, at the corner of Rietfontein Road and Poort Street, the driver exited his vehicle and repeatedly struck my driver’s window with his hand. I observed that he was an adult white male. There was also another person in his vehicle.
It became apparent to him that I was a woman alone in my car. Despite this, he continued his aggressive behaviour, including repeatedly braking suddenly in front of me as I drove on.
Shaken and frightened, I chose not to engage and continued driving towards the Van Heerden Pharmacy and medical centre precinct.
At the corner of Rietfontein and Beukes roads, I turned left towards Stephanus Road, while he continued straight along Rietfontein Road in the direction of the medical centre.
The driver appeared to be of an older age group and should have exercised better judgement. If he believed I was in the wrong, there were more appropriate ways to address the situation than resorting to aggression.

The incident left me deeply shaken, and I am still experiencing fear and anxiety about driving. It has affected my sense of safety and confidence when travelling alone.
Here are a few questions I have regarding the incident:
Why did the driver behave in such an aggressive and intimidating manner?
Was it necessary for him to exit his vehicle and strike my window?
What can be done to prevent such incidents on our roads?
Did anyone witness this incident? If so, I urge them to come forward and condemn such behaviour.
I regret that I was unable to obtain the vehicle’s registration details and hope that anyone who may have witnessed the incident can assist.
