Getting up to speed for the Dusi
The 22km race took place on a fine day with sufficient breeze and overcast skies for the paddlers to enjoy the tough, hard slog
Although the ERK Dusi training race took place early on Saturday, January 10, before some companies and schools re-opened, the popular race at Homestead Dam attracted a good field of over 80 canoeists, mostly those striving to build up stamina and fitness for the world’s toughest endurance event in February, the Dusi from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
Bob Harvey from Kempton Park and member of East Rand Kayak Club finished the tough enduro training race, despite admitting that December had been a lazy period with no training. And with five weeks to go, the pressure is on to shed the excess kilos and get the speed, fitness and stamina up to speed before the Dusi in February.
The 22km race took place on a fine day with sufficient breeze and overcast skies for the paddlers to enjoy the tough, hard slog which included two portages of 2km each on the side of the dam, carrying their boats, in Dusi tradition.
