Champ to defend title
The kemptonian Deon Coetzee is not worried at all about his opponent Kevin Lerena
SOUTH African cruiserweight champion, Deon Coetzee (29) from Bonaero Park, will be defending his title on July 30 at Emperors Palace.
Coetzee won the title in September last year.
The national boxing champion started boxing at the age of 19 and loves the sport because it’s not a team sport.
“When you lose you can’t blame anyone but yourself and no one can make you lose,” he said.
Coetzee has competed in 15 fights and only lost four.
Boxing runs in the family and his uncle, Gerrie Coetzee, is a former world heavyweight champion. He also has four cousins who are fighters.
From outside the ring boxing comes across as a dangerous sport with fighters seldom leaving the ring with no injuries.
“If you train hard, there’s nothing to worry about, especially if you’re fit,” said Coetzee.
Coetzee will be fighting against Kevin Lerena (23).
“He’s a good fighter but I’m not worried at all.”
Asked what the audience should expect: “I always train to be fit for 12 rounds but a knockout will be a bonus,” he confidently responded.
