Ekurhuleni youth taught the secrets to Olympic success
South Africa's top athletes took time off from their busy schedule to enjoy the day's festivities with amateur athletes from across Ekurhuleni.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, in partnership with the SASCOC and the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Center, hosted an Olympics Day on August 30 in Boksburg.
South Africa’s top athletes took time off from their busy schedule to enjoy the day’s festivities with amateur athletes from across Ekurhuleni.
They also took part in a 5 kilometre fun walk, a 7.9 kilometre run and an aerobics sessions.
The Commonwealth Youth Games will be held in Samoa and the All Africa Games will take place at Brazzaville, in the Congo.
Olympics Day is the only annual, worldwide event of the Olympic movement, which serves as an ideal platform to encourage people to become more active while highlighting the benefits of being physically active.
Banyana Banyana stars who represented South Africa in women’s football at the 2012 London Olympics, Refiloe Jane, Janine Van Wyk and Amanda Dlamini, also joined in the day’s activities.
The EMM’s spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe, said young people were taught about the importance of the Olympics’ philosophy of life, which combines the values of a balanced mind, will and body.
“They soon learnt that the Olympics is not just about competing for medals, but also tackling the issues of racism and fairness, as well as working with communities,” said Mr Gadebe.
