Running club invites you to join

The club is centered on providing a platform for training athletes who belong to different running clubs

TSHWARANO Running Club was founded by five times Comrades Marathon gold medalist and 2012 Comrades winner, Ludwick Mamabolo (37), in December 2013.

At the 2010 Comrades Marathon, Mamabolo was the first South African to cross the finish line and took second place overall.

Mambolo is a Kemptonian and created the club as part of giving back to the community. The club is centered on providing a platform for training athletes who belong to different running clubs.

According to the club’s chairperson, Adolph Gaza, the club has around 48 members with two junior members aged 19.

“We don’t have sponsors and many of our good runners are from underprivileged backgrounds. We have a coach who designs individualised training programmes for each member,” explained Gaza.

A monthly R50 contribution is expected from each member.

The team’s coach and vice chairperson, Khotso Kotso, said training took place on daily from 5:30pm. The club has track training, weekly time trials and Saturday and Sunday long runs.

“All members run according to the days’ set programmes in preparation for different distances ranging from 10km to the ultimate 89km ultra-marathon,” explained Kotso.

Tshwarano means unity and the team unites different running clubs.

The Department of Sports and Recreation donated tracksuits and running shoes for the runners.

“We have competitive runners and social runners. Some have participated in the Olympics and championships. We invite runners of all ages interested in training to join,” said Gaza.

Training takes place at Barnard Stadium daily.
