Academy swimmers receive awards at 15th celebration
In total, 154 certificates were awarded and all swimmers were recognised
THE Aquatic Academy in Croydon held its 15th annual prize-giving and recognition awards evening on April 26.
Various swimmers were awarded trophies as they are now competing at a higher standard of competition than before.
The Michael Brand Trophy for the overall best male swimmer was awarded to Kyle McKenzie who, among many exceptional achievements the past season, won two bronze medals at the SA Youth Nationals for both the 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley.
McKenzie also qualified to swim in one semi-final at the open age group and qualified for both the SA Junior and Youth National Championships. He was also selected for the Eastern Gauteng Aquatics (EGA) Strategic Squad and broke a record in the 100m breaststroke at the short course interprovincials and was second in the 200m individual medley at the Schools Prestige Gala.

The Isabel Humphrey Trophy for overall best female swimmer was awarded to Savannah Mitchell for qualifying to compete at the SA Junior and Youth Nationals.
Mitchell was also selected as a member of the EGA Strategic Squad and broke the 100m breaststroke record for woman at the short course interprovincials.

Top sports person: Kent Field.
Top male SAJN national championship qualifier: Kyle McKenzie.
Top woman’s SAJN national championship qualifier: Savannah Mitchell.
Top male level 3 swimmer: Murray Copeland.
Top female level 3 swimmer: Colette Fourie.
Top male level 2 swimmer: Clayton Malaza.
Top female Level 2 swimmer: Savannah Sheerin.
Top male level 1 swimmer: Jayden Botha.
Top female level 1 swimmer: Ashley Corns.
Open water male: Nicholas Smith.
Open water female: Kerrin Burgess.
Most promising novice boy: Onalerena Matli.
Most promising novice girl: Nicole van Zyl.
Shooting star male: Kyle North.
Shooting star female: Mikayla Pon.
Hell week trophy winner: Kyle McKenzie.

Two special trophies were awarded to Kendrick Chiramba, the pool caretaker, and Kempton Express for assisting so many swimmers to realise their potential.
Recognition awards were handed out to all the swimmers for provincial representation in both pool swimming, open water and water polo.
Jessica Burgess represented EGA at two events in the past season and Adrian Ristow was selected for the first time to swim in the short course interprovincial.
The water polo swimmers that were recognised were Brooklynn Bohler, Keagan Bothma, Murray Copeland, Oyama Malaza, Travis and Wyatt Banks for Eastern school teams and Caitlin Stott for Central Gauteng schools.
In total, 154 certificates were awarded and all swimmers who competed in the 2016 short course championships, long course championships and the different levels of regional and national competitions were recognised.
