Zayde back in the saddle, back in the team

His horse and best friend, Speckled Egg, was also injured and had since gone on ‘pension’

A young horse rider from Kempton Park has again been selected for the Ekurhuleni A team after being out of the saddle for several months following a bad fall.

Zayde Coverwell (9), a Grade Three learner at Laerskool Impala, has been chosen to ride for the Ekurhuleni A team (7-13 years) in dressage and working riding, while he will compete for the B team in second dressage level.

The teams were announced following four South African National Equestrian Schools Association (SANESA) qualifiers.

In 2016 Zayde was also selected for the Ekurhuleni A team as well as the Gauteng A team and competed at the nationals.

But bad luck struck at the nationals. Zayde was in a very good winning spot when he fell at the last jump and was injured.

His horse and best friend, Speckled Egg, was also injured and had since gone on “pension”.

Three to four months of recovery followed for the young rider before he got his new horse, African Dawn, in January.

He was back in the saddle and immediately participated in competitions at Stable Yard where he won a few medals. He made it through all four Sanesa qualifiers. This year Zayde did not compete in jumping but only in dressage and working riding levels.

At the fourth qualifier earlier this month Zayde achieved a first place in the working riding competition as well as second and fourth places in both dressage competitions.

In this year’s four SANESA qualifiers he made 1 168 individual points and 1 055 points for his school.
