Birchleigh rugby coach spends time with Wallabie kicking coach

Coach Steven Schamrel spent time with rugby icons during the school holidays

HOËRSKOOL Birchleigh coach Steven Schamrel spent time working closely with former Springbok flyhalf and Wallabies kicking coach, Braam van Straaten, these school holidays.

The u-14 coach also worked with numerous other rugby icons as part of the Investec International Rugby Academy’s high-performance training courses held at St Charles College in Pietermaritzburg between July 1 and 5.

According to Urban House Media’s Tegan Mitchell, Schamrel showed great interest in learning more, interacting with the participants and playing an active part in the proceedings.

Hoërskool Birchleigh learners and staff will be proud to see their coach has been making an extra effort to gain knowledge that can only better the school’s rugby and style of play.

Coach Schamrel told EXPRESS, “I have a lot of talented players and I felt I needed to attend the training to better my skills as a coach so I can develop the players’ talents. I can say that I am inspired by the players themselves and the fact that I have an opportunity to have an influence on the players and nurture their talents.”

The English teacher said rugby helped the players acquire discipline, enabling them to work in a team and gain confidence in themselves.

“I wish to thank the school for assisting me and making this possible. I also want to thank the academy because they are doing something great to boost South African rugby, especially at school level,” he concluded.
