Outfielder for Red Sox represents SA at world championships
The South African team finished 10th out of 16 competing countries
BRANDON Bouillon, the outfielder for Red Sox Baseball Club, was again selected to represent South Africa at a world championship event.
This time it was the 2017 Softball World Championships in Whitehorse, Canada during July.
The South African team finished 10th out of 16 competing countries with New Zealand taking top honours, followed by Australia and Canada.
Commenting on the results, Brandon’s grandfather, David Hartslief, said the team’s final position did not accurately reflect the standards and expertise of the country’s capabilities in the games of baseball and softball.
“More often than not the better players do not get to represent the country as there is no sponsorship available for these sports. The minimum amount required for the Canadian championships was R25 000 a player, far in excess of what these youngsters, their clubs or their parents can afford.
“It is a disgrace that the National Lottery, together with the ministry of sport, do nothing to finance all the sporting teams that represent South Africa at international events here and abroad.”
