Barnstormers pilots prove cardboard can fly
Pilots had fun building their own machines
MEMBERS of Barnstormers Model Flying Club took to the sky with a variety of quite unusual aircraft when they competed in the Chairman’s Challenge on September 2.
Pilots had the opportunity to build a cardboard aircraft designed by chairman Danie Potgieter and member Glen Robberts.
The all cardboard design weighed 700 grams without its electronics. Pilots built their aircraft in different ways. Some opted to use electric motors and others went with nitro motors.
Although all kits were the same, everyone showed their own building abilities.
Nine pilots opted to enter performing exercises which included challenges like spot landings, pylon racing and general flying.
There were a few minor incidents where aircraft were lost due to technical failures. With all that a lot of fun was had by the attending pilots.
Rod Parker and son Christopher of Benoni took home the floating trophy for their exceptional build and flying technique.
