SA Derby action this weekend

The 18-obstacle, 1200m course is only ever won by the horse and rider combination that is the fittest and most focused

THE Cell C South African Derby, the toughest showjumping challenge on the equestrian calendar, takes place at Kaylami Equestrian Park on October 1, starting at 2pm.

The 18-obstacle, 1 200m course is only ever won by the horse and rider combination that is the fittest, the most focused and the most on form on the day.

The event already starts on September 27, with free entrance on September 27, 28 and 29.

Attended by over 5 000 people, this event sees the who’s who of the fashion and riding worlds gather for a day of welcoming hospitality, family fun and equine excellence.

The four-time champion, Nicole Horwood, says she simply loves this event.

“I love derby, the atmosphere and crowds. It draws so many people from all walks of life and there is such a festive feel. The crowds really get involved and it makes a big difference to the riders. It’s like they carry us around the course and want us all to do well and succeed.”

The entrance fee on September 30 is R50 – R100 (depending on seats) and October 1 it ranges from R150 to R600.

Tickets are for sale on Ticketpro. Discounted weekend packages are available.
