First edition of netball tournament a huge success

Black Eagles emerged victorious

The Adelaide Mosehla Netball Tournament was a success as spectators enjoyed themselves by cheering for their favourite teams.

On September 24, five netball teams took to the netball courts, eliminating one team after the other in pursuit of the R20 000 first prize for the best team.

The games’ co-ordinator, Nomadlozi Mashiloane, said the first edition of the tournament was a positive accomplishment and they were looking to grow and bring in more improvements.

“This sports event introduced us to a new sports avenue, considering the Mosehla games were mainly focused on soccer. We expected to have 16 teams participating in the tournament but due to lack of information on the part of prospective teams, we ended up with only five teams participating,” said Mashiloane.

She said some teams could not meet the set requirements because they did not understand the rules to be followed when registering because they only found out about the affiliation protocol at a late stage.

“For the 2018 Adelaide Mosehla Netball Tournament, we have resolved to start disseminating information as early as November 2017. We want teams to have enough time to prepare for this annual netball tournament. We will host the games around the same time next year,” said Mashiloane.

The teams that participated were Scorpion Netball Club, Black Eagles, Phiri Netball Team, Chasers Netball Team and Johannesburg Central Netball Club (JCNC).

Mashiloane said they had a ticket raffle to build a fixture for the tournament.

“The first two teams that were drawn in the raffle secured their place in the semi-final and we had the other teams competing to get to the semi-finals.”

The first game of the tournament was played between Phiri and Scorpions and the score was 49-9 in favour of the Scorpions.

The second game was played between JCNC and Chasers and the score was 18-24 in favour of Chasers.

“JCNC and Chasers were already tipped for the semi-finals. The two teams got picked from the raffle but they played a friendly game against each other to entertain spectators while the other teams were taking a rest from their match,” said Mashiloane.

The third game was played between Phiri and Black Eagles and the score was 53-4 in favour of Black Eagles.

The fourth game was played between Black Eagles and Scorpions and the score was 26-21 in favour of Black Eagles.

After the eliminating matches, the tournament got to the semi-finals where the remaining participating teams were Black Eagles, JCNC, Chasers and Scorpions.

The first game in the sem-ifinals was played between Scorpions and Chasers and the score was 39-37 in favour of Scorpions.

The second game was between Black Eagles and JCNC and the score was 25-21 in favour of Black Eagles.

Mashiloane said the two teams that made it to the finals were Scorpions and Black Eagles.

Best shooter Palesa Mbukwane, Semaleng Masola and best defender Lerato Tladi.

“The final game was a tough one between Scorpions and Black Eagles and it ended with a score of 28-25 in favour of Black Eagles.

Black Eagles took home the first prize of R20 000 and Scorpions pocketed the second prize of R10 000.

Both teams come from Katlehong and they proved to be the champions of the Adelaide Mosehla Netball Tournament 2017,” said Mashiloane.

“We want to thank the community for supporting this initiative. They were well disciplined and it was a peaceful tournament. I can safely say it was a success. Let us keep the same level of discipline and respect in our future games.

“We want to thank all teams that participated. Thank you for committing yourselves and for being co-operative throughout the tournament. Teams that were unable to participate this year can look out for the opening of the early November registration for our 2018 games. Grab the opportunity and secure your place.”

She also wants to thank the management for their hard work and team spirit.

“We have learnt a lot from the first edition of the games and we are looking forward to applying all the lessons learnt and experiences gained in our future games. To all Tembisa residents, let us work together in building and growing sport in Tembisa.”
