Enter now for East Rand Classic cycle race at airport
The races will take place on April 27 and 28. Entries close on April 15.
The East Rand Classic, formerly known as the Emperors Palace Classic, is around the corner.
Despite its name change, the mountain bike race (50km or 25km) on April 27 and the road race (98km or 48km) on April 28 promises the same offerings as its predecessor.
The only significant change to the race is that it will be hosted at Airports Company South Africa, which is adjacent to OR Tambo International Airport. Organisers believe this will make for a better logistical outcome in terms of access, security and parking.
While all eyes will be on the feature 98km race, won last year by Reynard Butler, ASG Events chief executive Erick Oosthuizen believes the other races will also be exciting.
“The mountain bike trails, for example, will take you right past the ‘giant birds’ of OR Tambo,” he said. “You also have a forest section and this is all just metres from built-up Joburg, so that’s a really nice aspect.”
Youngsters can look forward to a children’s race, which will be set up inside the parking area of the venue. Racers can also look forward to plenty of vendors to choose from on the day.
“The East Rand Classic gives cyclists an opportunity to have a great day out on the bike before the Jozi winter chill really sets in,” Oosthuizen added.
The closing date for entries is April 15. Readers can visit www.eastrandclassic.co.za to enter or for more details.
