Homestead Park United wins Malawian Independence Day Celebration Tournament

Malawi Independence Day Celebrations Tournament match held at Makhulong Stadium.

Homestead Park United celebrated their 5-1 victory against Frame United in the Independence Day Celebration Tournament sponsored by Makuru at Makhulong Stadium on April 7.

The tournament is in celebration of the Malawian Independence Day, July 6. The tournament finals will be held on this day and the venue is still to be decided.

Homestead Park United dominated from the start. Frame United attacked from the right side of the field, but could not break Homestead Park United’s defence.

Mphatswa Kaubweya of Homestead Park United scored the first goal within four minutes and a second before half-time, making the score 2-0.

Vincent Chithumba of Frame United scored their first goal minutes into the second half, but Homestead Park United picked up momentum and scored three more goals by Banzo Phiri, Alley Denson and Gibson Moyo.

Joseph Mayoyo, Frame United coach, said it was a tough match – the boys didn’t attack and lacked fitness.

“The opposition played passes which we could not defend against, which led to us changing formations in the second half,” said Mayoyo.

Phiri, Homestead Park United captain, said they had a game plan they stuck to.

“The match was difficult, but we managed to score five goals. We were lucky to get an early goal, the coach told us not to chase the game and to get an early goal, which will make our opponents chase the match,” said Phiri.

Homestead Park United coach John Bernard said the boys weren’t confident in the first half, but they had a plan B.

“We did not allow them any to play in the second half, which we benefited from in the end. It is a reflection of our teamwork on the field,” said Bernard.
