Fans kept on their feet as Chiefs, Highlands Park take honours

Downs still lead the pack

Mamelodi Sundowns maintained their top of the table status after embarrassing Kaizer Chiefs with a 3 – 0 victory in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge at the Makhulong Stadium on Sunday.

On the other hand, the home team, Highlands Park climbed to the 6th position of the log following their 3 – 1 thumping of Polokwane City.

As expected, the war between these reserves four giants lived up to expectations. They dished out top-class entertaining football, much to the fans’ delight.

Coming to the games, both Sundowns and Highlands Park have had a bright start into their campaigns with Downs winning their opening fixture, while the home team only registering one victory and one loss.

Sunday’s encounter provided both sides with a chance to get back to winning ways as they looked to enhance their chances of being in the running for the championship honours later in the season.

Sundowns stole an early lead in the first stanza through striker Musawenkosi Mdhluli.

From there on, Sundowns dictated matters and were duly rewarded through Buhle Mfodololo who unleashed a long-range grass-cutter to extend the lead. They were not done yet as Mailula finished his brace in style to make it three.

In the other game, Highlands Park’s goal came from the boots of midfielder Thalente Mbatha, who scored a brace, and Ronald Frans, before Polokwane City’s Cole Hartzenburg stealing the consolation goal.
