Macala street soccer launched

Macala five-a-side tournament in Ivory Park.

Chilly Boys celebrated their 8-4 victory against TC Section to win the first annual Macala five-a-side street soccer tournament at Malatsi Park in Ivory Park on September 14.

According to the tournament organisers, this showcase was to spot talent from the neighbourhood and keep young minds engaged in something positive. Four teams battled it out for the R800 prize.

“This tournament will one day grow to be one of the top competitions at kasi level,” said Bafana Rikhotso, co-organiser.

“We invited eight teams, buthad to unfortunately downsize. We hope more teams will show us the desire to come on board as we will be hosting this tournament again soon.

“Congrats to the winning team, they showed composure, hunger and love for the game. We saw young boys partaking, which meant a lot,” added Rikhotso.

Dumisani Skosana, co-organiser, said the tournament was a success despite setbacks, which will be avoided next tournament.

“We are looking for individuals and stakeholders who would like to sponsor us to grow. We want to attract players from the Castle League, Motsepe League and surrounding leagues to join us during the off seasons,” said Skosana.

“This is raw football, we are at roots level. We call this street soccer, which is famous in the neighbourhood for attracting soccer fanatics to experience skill and flare.

“The winning team will surely use the prize for the benefit of the players,” said Skosana.

Rikhotso added that they will once again host it in November to attract the youth while schools are closed.
