Warbirds take to the sky at annual Barnstormers day
At least 38 pilots and 90 aircrafts graced the skies with aerobatic spectacles at Barnstormers’ Warbirds Day Airshow.
The 40km/h wind on Sunday had miniature planes drawing the eyes of spectators and children to the heavens in delight of spectacular stunts at Barnstormers’ Warbirds Day.
Tiny engines rose to the challenge by performing incredible aerobatic routines after which candy rained down from a plane’s belly and little ones scattered to find the sweet treasures.
The crowd was particularly amazed by the routine of a young man who competed in the world championships in Italy at the end of August. Josh Twoney (17), from Randburg, came 10th in the junior category at the world champs despite his deformed arms and hands.
Twoney had been flying for 10 years now: “It’s a sport that ignites adrenaline in my system. Although it is a costly sport, it can be manageable if you have a dad like mine who is equally enthused by it as me.”
Barnstormers chairperson Danie Potgieter said it was their 31st annual Warbirds Day since 1988. “This remains a very popular sport for all ages. We have competitors aged five to folks in their 90s.”
He says although it can be an expensive hobby, their flight club makes provision for entry-level pilots who may borrow light trainer models to become accustomed to the mid-air journey. He also said the registration fees are free to children up until the age of 18.
“Our goal is to urge children to compete in activities such as these, so they might get a break from their digital screens.”
Potgieter gave Express four tips for those wanting to compete in the aerobatic hobby for the first time. “First thing to do is to visit a hobby shop where a dealer will be able to assist you with the right tools at entry-level.
“Then, it is important to be registered at the South African Model Aircraft Association.”
Furthermore, newbies are encouraged to join a club, of which there are about 20-30 situated in Joburg, said Potgieter. Once you’re all geared up to flap your wings, it is advised to seek an instructor to show you the ropes.
