Girl Power Cup showcases young female football talent in Ekurhuleni

The annual Girl Power Cup at Welamlambo Sports Ground celebrated Women’s Day with thrilling matches and standout performances from rising female football stars.

The Welamlambo Sports Ground was alive with excitement on August 13 as the annual Girl Power Cup celebrated Women’s Day, showcasing some of the best young female football talent in the region.

The tournament delivered thrilling matches that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

In the U15 division, Golden Girls emerged as champions after a convincing 2-0 win over Phoenix and later sealed their campaign with a final victory against Hoërskool Birchleigh.

Earlier in the tournament, they faced Curro Thatchfield Football Academy in a nail-biting encounter that ended 2-2 in regular time, with Golden Girls ultimately winning 3-1 on penalties.

Golden Girls coach Isabel Bambo expressed her pride in her team’s outstanding performance and unwavering commitment to the sport.

“I am proud of these young girls. They showed discipline, passion, and teamwork from the first whistle to the last.

“This victory is not just about the goals we scored, but about the spirit and unity they displayed throughout the tournament.
“The future is bright for women’s football if we keep nurturing this talent,” she said.

Phoenix coach Muzi Mkhwanazi congratulated the Golden Girls on their well-deserved win.

“I’m proud of how the girls fought. Even though the result didn’t go our way, we created chances, showed heart, and this experience will only make us stronger.

“The tournament is about growth, and today was a learning curve for us. We will take the lessons, work harder at training, and come back sharper. I believe in these girls, and this is just the beginning for Phoenix,” he explained.

A total of 17 goals were scored in the U15 division, with Golden Girls dominating the competition.

They capped off their campaign in style with a commanding 5-0 victory over Hoërskool Birchleigh.
