Open mic sessions in aid of charity

The admission fee to the event is any non-perishable item, clothing or toiletries

“EVERYBODY wants to change the world, yet there is this misconception that in order to do so, one needs to move mountains.

The truth is, like it has been said countless times, changing the world starts with one random act of kindness.”

These are the words of Van Riebeeck Park resident and founder of 67 Ribbons and Food for Soul Sunday, Angela Mthembu.

Food for Soul Sunday open mic sessions is a community outreach project run by seven young women who aim to change the world through one random act at a time.

“We are about random acts of kindness through performing arts. It is said, when an artist performs, they give you a part of them they can never take back. Time is the most valuable resource, so this is the reason we at 67 Ribbons started food for soul because we wanted not only to help save the seed, feed underprivileged boys but in the process we wanted to give a part of artists.

The event, according to Mthembu, will take place every last Sunday of the month at the Two Oceans bar and restaurant on the corner of the P91 and De Wiekus Road, Waterfall Park, Van Riebeeck Park.

“Several upcoming artists who are mostly within the borders of the East Rand come together and perform at this venue. Instead of customers being charged an entrance fee, the admission for this event is non-perishable food, clothing or toiletries. These items are all donated to a charity organisation we are currently working with,” explained Mthembu.

Mthembu said the charity they were involved with is known as Save the Seed Foundation based in Kempton Park central.

The foundation strives to serve and nurture the youth of South Africa and assist in unleashing the dormant gifts that lie within them by initiating socially uplifting programmes aiming to remedy the respective communities highlighted social ills.”

The next food for soul will be on the March 29.
