Artists to unite against gender-based violence at Kempton Square
The aim of the campaign is to have artists united in one voice, bringing awareness through music, poetry and dance
POPULAR South African artists will unite in a performance against gender-based violence at Kempton Square on Thursday.
Various artists from different industries will perform a range of shows as part of The Plat4orm’s Legends Unite Against Gender Based Violence campaign. The programme aims to raise awareness about the epidemic of violence against women.
The Plat4orm is a non-profit organisation for artists by artists and has been hosting a series of “Activations” in and around Gauteng through this campaign.
“The Plat4orm has partnered with the Department of Arts and Culture and has successfully collaborated with various legends in the arts industry, including Sibongile Khumalo, Ihhashi Elimhlophe, Ray Phiri, Thembi Nyandeni and Ebony Nqobo in spreading the message on gender based violence,” Lillian Tshabalala, PR officer for The Plat4orm, explained.
On Thursday, the artists who will be united at the shopping centre include legendary music group the Mahotella Queens and actors Shaleen Surtie Richards, Robert Whitehead and Lydia Mokgokoloshi. Since it is also Youth Month, various influential young artists will also be joining in the campaign, including Cornet Mamabolo and Mogau Motlhwatsi (both of TV drama Skeem Saam) and Batsile Ramasodi (Generations).
The aim of the campaign is to have artists united in one voice bringing awareness through music, poetry and dance, to spark a conversation in our communities and society.
The programme for the day will include: Batsile Ramasodi as MC, a music performance by the Mahotella Queens, poetry by Robert Whitehead. a theatre performance by Shaleen Richards as a fortune teller and Lydia Mokgokoloshi as a sangoma, as well as a dance performance by Udumo lwami and Sphiwe’s dancers.
The event will start at noon and will continue until 5pm.
