‘The Baby’ confronts every Jo Soap

In the broadest sense, it is an outcry against abortion, against violence towards woman, and against rape

“THE BABY” is a new pinnacle in the line of successful productions written and directed by Heinrich Hamm, providing both entertainment, as well as social commentary to the audience.

What will a 16-year-old girl do when she falls pregnant with an unwanted child? And what does this have to do with the Biblical figures of Mary, Joseph and Gabriel, or your or my life?

These are some of the burning questions we are confronted with in everyday situations.

When Grace, played by Nontuthoko Myalezwa, finds out she is pregnant with an unwanted baby, her world falls apart and the only option she sees is that of an abortion. A young man, John, played by Sibusiso Nkala, enters her life and offers a shoulder. He tells her the story of Mary and Joseph (played by Tadiwanashe Shongedza and Thato Ramogale).

After Docta Cheeza (Mpho Kganakga) had harassed her, and a mystical sender of messages (Thato Ramogale) contacted her on her cellphone, Grace needs to make a choice with her life.

The characters are true to life, offering the audience questions and emotions they can easily identify with. Mary and Joseph are portrayed as real-life people with all the dilemmas of pregnancy which was crucial in that time, they had to face,.

The production consists of acting and drama, choral verse, choreography and although they make use of back tracks, singing is not pre-recorded.

This is a realistic production that is hard-hitting, as difficult as sticky toffee, yet full, melting and sweet as chocolate on the tongue.

This is a must-see for the distinguished theatre goer, the young and old, and Christians.

The production runs from August 25 to 29 with a special free show for senior citizens on Wednesday, August 26, at 10am.

Tickets can be obtained from Hoërskool Birchleigh.
