Lerothodi Moagi (37), popularly known as Towdeemac, is a music producer, songwriter, composer, performer, music technology facilitator and music business consultant.

Where does the name Towdeemac come from?

“Towdee comes from the last two syllables in my full name, Lerothodi and ‘mac’ is a description of how I have a way with words,” he explained.

Towdeemac is a member of the popular hip-hop group Morafe which consists of himself, Khulichana (Khulani Morule) and Kaygizm (Kgaugelo Phaswana).

All three members are excelling in the music industry.

The group fuses vernacular rap with a twist of soul and R n B and their music involves influential messages in Setswana and English. Their focus over the past few years, however, has been on solo projects as individual artists.

Moagi ventured into his solo career in 2012 and released a solo album titled Lesson 1. His single, Mr Tswaknificent, gained tremendous airplay and became his solo hit.

He also released Yes Chick, featuring B3nchmarQ as a single on its own. The song was warmly welcomed by music lovers across the country.

The music producer extraordinaire has contributed immensely to what has become known as the Motswako Movement for the past 15 years.

“Music is life to me. It’s the only language I speak fluently,” explained Moagi.

He has produced a lot of popular Motswako songs which include The Whole Thing by Morafe, Bereka (featuring HHP) by Morafe, Platinum Visa by HHP and Futhumatsa by Khuli Chana, among others.

The 37-year-old has also worked with artists such as JR, Fifi Cooper, Sean Pages, KidX, L-Tido, Kwesta, Pro, Maggs, Black Les, N’Veigh, Tuks Senganga, Mo’lemi, Stoan Seate, Notshi, Mr Selwyn, Zeus, pH, Max Hoba, and many others.

Besides producing, writing and rapping, he teaches music business and music technology at Emendy Multimedia Technology Institute and also hosts hashtag Backstage Lectures Music Workshops.

“After lecturing at Emendy for four years, I embarked on a mission to help the talented youth who need the knowledge and skills to navigate this tough industry,” he explained.

The workshops were inspired by his love for acquiring and sharing knowledge in the realm of digital music production and in an effort to help make a difference in the lives of the talented youth who have the passion and aptitude but can’t afford to study at expensive music colleges.

For someone who has been in the music industry for over 10 years, what are the mac’s thoughts on the state of the industry in 2018?

“I Iike all the developments. Everybody in the industry has been forced to learn new tricks and develop new business models. That’s all exciting to me.”

Not only does he make music but he also runs a music business consultancy named TswakWorld. Through this company he develops artists and assists them to advance their career and eventually develop their own record labels.

What can people expect from him in 2018?

“#HugeDaOracle, #PurpleKeyz, #RustySoul, #TswakWorld, #BackstageLectures, watch this space,” is all he had to say.

Moagi advised upcoming musicians to familiarise themselves with not just music but the law governing the industry. “They should study entertainment law like their life depends on it, because it does.”

He appreciates all genres.

“I listen to and embrace all genres of music but I enjoy making Mzansi flavoured hip-hop.”

Towdeemac would like to be remembered as a man who made a difference whenever he was given the opportunity.

He has a son and daughter.

“I’d like for them to grow up knowing that creativity and a deep understanding of conceptualisation run in their blood and that that makes them natural born winners.”

What inspires him?

“My children and all of life’s little special (or weird) moments.”
