Ivory Park’s Sandy Alaska releases her first EP

Early in 2019, she featured in Benevolent Intentions by KoolB Exclusive.

Nonhlanhla Sandy Ngwenya, known as Sandy Alaska, a singer and songwriter, has released her first extended-play (EP) titled Reborn on September 21.

She’s known for her low-key chilled, yet graceful vocals. Born and raised in the streets of Ivory Park, Sandy began realising her passion for music in 2006, where she participated in school singing groups.

She joined a primary school band, where she learnt to play the fipple flute. Finding it tough to verbally express herself, she started to put into writing her emotions, perspective and experiences at the age of 12.

She then finally decided to fully pursue a career in music. Her EP contains deep content, diverse angles of love.

Early in 2019, she featured in Benevolent Intentions by KoolB Exclusive.

“My dad has always been supportive, he was the first person to know I could sing when I was in Grade Four. At that stage I didn’t have confidence at all. When I went to tertiary level, I met friends who really believed in me, and would try to convince me to believe in myself too,” said Ngwenya.

“Still bottling everything up, I tried singing at church, where I realised I was just being judged for being different, since I like wearing boys’ clothes. I started taking videos when I sang and posting them on social media, that was when KoolB texted me and said ‘I have a studio, let’s try something out’. Luckily, I’ve always had my parents’ and friends’ support,” said Ngwenya.

The youngster said she doesn’t have one individual who she can fully look up to in the music industry, she have multiple, each contributing in different ways – their structure of writing, music genre, the flows and the emotions they put in their songs.

“Lyrics is what I’ve always admired the most. I believe in music being a sense of expressing our feelings and telling stories of not only our lives, but others’ as well.

Reborn dropped on September 21 on SoundCloud and Audiomack and is already receiving online response.

Ngwenya has teamed up with friends and are pushing their music independently under Deviant Entertainment. She said she can’t wait to offer everyone more of what she has in store.
