Conservation society cancels AGM and talk

Photographer would have shared his memories at the meeting.

The annual general meeting and Rolf Wiesler’s eagerly anticipated talk on bagging 847 bird species on March 19 had been cancelled due to the Covid-19 virus.

When Rolf Wiesler took to photographing birds, he never dreamed that his tally would reach 500 species, never mind well over 800.

He will share this achievement with members and friends of Modderfontein Conservation Society on March 19 in Modderfontein Town Hall, 1 Casino Road, at 7.30pm.

Wiesler’s wife, Karin, introduced him to birding somewhat late in life, but when the bug bit, there was no holding back. He currently boasts a photographic “lifer” list of 847 birds.

“As it has become more difficult to add to this list, I have expanded my expertise and now photograph all aspects of biodiversity,” he explains.

“But birds still hold a great attraction for me, especially those which have so far eluded my lens,” said Wiesler.

His photographs have been used in various publications, including four books authored by Lee Gutteridge, well-known wildlife writer, nature guide and trainer.

The presentation will follow the society’s annual general meeting and conclude with light refreshments.

Visitors are welcome to attend this meeting. An entrance fee of R30 is charged to help cover expenses.
