Knowledge is Power showcases talent

Desire to perform gives birth to performing arts organisation.

Knowledge is Power hosted a two-day competition at Ivory Park Community North Hall on March 14 and 15.

The event focused on poetry, music, dance and drama.

Founder of Knowledge is Power Albion ‘Strike’ Shikwambana said he started the organisation 10 years ago because growing up in Limpopo, there was a drought of activities for the youth and the only platform for him to express himself was the stage.

“I had to start this organisation to empower young people like myself who wanted to showcase their talents, so I recruited the youth and we deal with acting, theatre, poetry and performing arts.

“In 2010, we produced a movie called Through It All Love Remains, which we managed to sell 102 copies and we produced another one titled Bokamoso which sold over 1 000 copies. We also scored radio interviews on Thobela FM and a few other radio stations.

“Today, I am the face of G-Pride Magazine. They saw what we were about and came on board as sponsors. Winners of the competition will also be featured on this magazine as part of our agreement with them.

“The winners will also walk away with trophies and certificates. A representative of Ebony Lifestyles, another sponsor, came to watch the first show on Saturday and suggested that we host another event to keep the talent alive.”

The performing arts organisation also partnered with the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation to bring this competition to the people. Knowledge is Power has previously won a couple of awards.

“We won the Midrand Community Radio Talent search competition where we were number one in poetry and dance. “We were also in the first position in the Ishashalazi Theatre competition in dance, as well as being top three in the provincial level of the competition.”
