Local gospel artist uses music to heal from her painful past
Kempton Express chats to Zama Mntambo.
Gospel artist Zama Mntambo (35) of Kempton Park CBD said her music career was influenced by the challenges she encountered in the past.
Mntambo says singing and writing her own songs helped her get through the hardest times in her life.
“Growing up, I faced a lot of challenges but that did not stop me from making my dreams a reality. I am able to express myself better when I hold a mic and write songs. Most of the songs I write help me heal and trust that God will do more for me,” said Mntambo.
The Kemptonian said she was interested in music from a very young age.
“I used to have a music book when I was young. It was more like a hobby for me. I loved to sing for my mom and she encouraged me to sing because she believed I had a good voice. I was part of the school choir in primary and high school. I then realised that music was my calling and pursued it from there,” said Mntambo.
The mother of one said she was also inspired by gospel artist Ntokozo Mbambo.
“Locally, I am inspired by Mbambo and funny enough, some people say I look like her. Internationally, I am inspired by Tasha Cobbs. I just love the worshipper she is,” said Mntambo.
The 35-year-old is not a full-time musician. “If I’m not ministering at church programmes, I’m in the studio, working on my songs,” said Mntambo.
Mntambo said she did not allow performance anxiety and stage fright to get the best of her.
“Performance anxiety often holds me captive for a few days, hours or a minute before performing but the key is always preparation. The more thorough you are in your lyrics and rehearsals, the more likely you will be successful. My fans also keep me going and I can’t afford to disappoint them.
“I am naturally a friendly person, so it is not difficult to interact with my fans. I love them and welcome them with open arms. It can be overwhelming because I’m normally a quiet person; however, it is the most fulfilling feeling ever.”
The local star advises aspiring gospel artists to trust in God.
“Believe in yourself and know that whatever you face, there is God who already knows what you are going through. God knows how he is going to fix it for you, don’t allow negativity and challenges to break you, it all comes with the ministry. How you handle those challenges is what is important,” said Mntambo.
