An Edleen fitness model and businessman displayed his cooking skills on Come Dine With Me SA, winning the third episode of the new season.

Said Edleen resident Jaco de Bruyn (36): “I’m a major food fanatic and is constantly preparing food in the kitchen. I also come from a home where my mother made food all day long. If you were to look at her Facebook, all she posts is food.”

He says all he watches on TV is the Food Channel.

His boys would always ask, “Food Channel again, dad?”

He has been a Come Dine with Me viewer for years.

“I decided I was going to give it a try when I saw entries for the new season had opened.

“All we had to do was to take pictures of our kitchens and submit it. I thought it was quite simple.”

However, that was not the case.

Interviews and a house visit followed.

For Jaco, it was quite intimidating when the show’s representatives visited to “test his personality”.

“They throw you curve balls to test your reactions and get a feel of your social skills.

“Luckily, I have experience with TV so it was fun.

“It was my first time doing reality TV and it is something I would do again, like Survivor. Come Dine with Me took me out of my comfort zone and I really enjoyed it.

“I shared the episode with three interesting characters.

“Monique was the ‘cougar’, voluptuous and very flirty.”

For Jaco, the other male participant, Kerry, had no filter and a dirty mouth.

And then there was Bobbi who is very prim and proper, very reserved but fussy.

Ultimately, Jaco really enjoyed the group.

“The house had to be empty on the day of filming, so my wife and two boys weren’t here. We had to remain completely quiet about the content of the episode prior to airing and had only 50 minutes before the episode aired to promote it on social media.

“We weren’t allowed to talk politics or religion and were given topics to refer to, mainly pertaining to our personal frames of reference.”

When asked who his favourite host was, he said he enjoyed Kerry’s evening, although it wasn’t the best food.

“He obviously put in a lot of effort but he served giraffe. All I could think of was this majestic animal that was in a potjie in front of me. I have nothing against hunting, I hunt on occasion myself, but a giraffe is too beautiful for me.”

“Kerry also mentioned that the giraffe was old. But he is a very interesting person. I liked his house and theme for the party, which was your famous look-alike. I dressed up as the Terminator.

“Kerry dressed up as Elton John, which was aptly suitable.

Jaco’s winning three-course menu, which made him R10 000 richer, was lobster tail for starters, lamb shank for mains and crunchy caramel mousse for dessert.
