The Poncho Gang is a trio boy band formed under T-Town Media based in Birchleigh Hills and includes three rappers – Ronnie Ngceba (25), Sibusiso Ngubane (23) and Teboho Masiteng (29).

Poncho Gang was nominated for best hip-hop artist and best up-and-coming artist in the Golden Arts and Media Awards taking place on December 10.

The name Poncho means “free” and is of Spanish origin, which defines them as free-spirited individuals.

“We grew up going to church, this led us to music. Legends like Ringo Madlingozi and Twins inspired us to make music, but mostly it was the love of hip-hop music and being exposed to the new era of trap-soul which led us to making Afro-trap music.

“Our sound is Afro-trap soul, a combination of African hip-hop and soul music. Our creative process is being in studio jamming and freestyling on beats. It’s funny how the song title Benzo came about. We were joyriding a Mercedes-Benz and started freestyling about it, hence the title,” the trio said.

“The internet is a helping tool for new artists. Now we are heard by the masses.”
