EMPD weekly tip: driving in wet weather

Wet roads mean that tyres may only have half as much grip on the surface as on dry roads. Motorists will need to adapt their driving to suit these different conditions.

Wet roads mean that tyres may only have half as much grip on the surface as on dry roads. Motorists will need to adapt their driving to suit these different conditions.

“Increase your following distance, brake earlier, enter corners at slower speeds, have a firm grip on the steering wheel, switch on headlights in poor visibility and always maintain focus on the road ahead,” said Constable Joy Mdluli.

Front and back windscreen wipers must be checked regularly to ensure that they are working properly.

It is also important that motorists check that their brakes are in good working order.

“The condition of the tyres of the vehicle must be inspected often, as tyres with reduced tread depth may cause the vehicle to skid on wet roads.”

Crashes in wet conditions are common, and everyone should make a conscious effort to drive safely. Always wear your safety belt and ensure all children and passengers are also strapped in.
