Motorsport SA pays tribute to competitors’ talent

Motorsport is a team sport, and MSA recently took this opportunity to thank each and every member’s commitment to it at an awards ceremony.

Motorsport SA (MSA) acknowledged and awarded the country’s top motorsport competitors, past and present, at a ceremony at the Thaba Eco Hotel in Johannesburg on Sunday, February 5.

Anton Roux, MSA’s chairperson, said since 2019’s Covid, 810 events involving 60 226 participants have taken place.

Fifty-two champions received awards. Protea colours were awarded to 30 competitors, and eight special awards and four Golden Helmet Awards were handed out. In addition, awards for the photographer of the year and environmental project of the year were given to recipients with ages ranging between six and 70!

The Golden Helmet Award, MSA’s highest award, is given to competitors whose contribution to motorsport spans several decades. The four recipients were Charmaine Fortune, Ian Topliss, Robert Marle and Tjaart Joubert.

Senior Colour recipients.

Fortune is well known within both on- and off-road circles. Topliss’s accomplishments included regional and the Fédération Internationale de Motorcyclisme’s (FIM) motorcross championships. Marle was recognised for his accomplishments as a motorsport official, and the assistance and training he provided to competitors and other officials. Joubert was recognised for many years of service in various capacities to the single-seater racing circuit and competitors.

The Steve Wicks Motorsport Photographer of the Year Award went to Frikkie Ströh from Gauteng.

Finally, the Environmental Project of the Year was awarded to the MSA MX Junior team, which won the FIM’s Ride Green Environmental Award in Finland in 2022.
