Home Affairs urges eligible residents to apply for Smart ID cards as demand rises

The Department of Home Affairs is calling on naturalised citizens and permanent residents to apply for Smart ID cards, with applications continuing to increase across the country.

Home Affairs has reported a steady rise in Smart ID card applications, particularly from naturalised citizens and permanent residents.

The department is encouraging all eligible applicants to take advantage of the ongoing campaign and submit their applications at designated service points.

According to Home Affairs, Smart ID card applications are open to naturalised citizens and permanent residents who hold a green barcoded ID book and originate from countries listed for ordinary passport holders.

South African citizens who were born outside the country and are also in possession of a green barcoded ID book may apply as well.

Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, said the initiative aims to make identity services more accessible while ensuring that all qualifying residents benefit from modern, secure identity documents.

He encouraged applicants to visit any Home Affairs Live Capture Office or their preferred participating bank branch to complete the process.

Schreiber added that once application volumes decrease, the department will expand eligibility to include applicants from countries not currently listed for ordinary passport holders.

Residents are urged to scan the QR code provided on the department’s official poster to book an appointment.
More information, including the list of eligible countries, can be found on the Home Affairs website.
