City of Ekurhuleni warns against illegal fireworks before New Year

People caught setting off fireworks illegally will be fined R1,000 immediately.

The City of Ekurhuleni has urged residents and businesses to celebrate the New Year safely by following fireworks rules.

COE Department of Emergency Management Services (DEMS) communications officer Eric Maloka said that while fireworks are a customary part of New Year celebrations, incorrect use often causes distress to animals, injuries, and property damage.

He emphasised that it is strictly prohibited to intentionally or irresponsibly discharge fireworks near animals or people.

Important fireworks rules:
Fireworks Sales
All businesses selling fireworks must be certified by the SAPS Explosives Unit and approved by the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (Fire Safety Section).

Setting off fireworks
Fireworks cannot be ignited in public places, including parks, restaurants, shopping malls, or any shared spaces.

Safety precautions
It is illegal to aim or discharge fireworks at people, animals, buildings, or vehicles.

Fines and penalties
• Businesses selling fireworks without proper certification will be fined R2,500.
* People setting off fireworks illegally will receive an instant fine of R1,000.

Maloka stated that the City is working closely with SAPS, EMPD, and the Disaster and Emergency Management Services.

He added that all 30 emergency stations across Ekurhuleni are on high alert for New Year’s Eve and beyond.

Residents are urged to celebrate responsibly, keep noise levels down, and prioritise animal safety.
