Police confirm perp was shot in Theo van Rooyen hijacking

Van Rooyen and one of the suspects believed to be involved in his hijacking was also shot.

After a desperate call to find Theo van Rooyen, police confirm that he was found shot in the head. One of the perpetrators involved was also found with a gunshot wound, but was still alive.

Captain Solomon Sibiya from the West Rand Police said Van Rooyen arrived home at about 19:00 on Thursday, May 11. He parked his vehicle at the gate to open it.

Three men approached him before he could open his gate and ordered him at gunpoint to get into the back seat of his vehicle.

“The suspects sped off in his vehicle as one of them, armed with a firearm, sat in the backseat with Van Rooyen.”

Van Rooyen’s vehicle was spotted later that evening and followed to Sinqobile by security guards.

When the hijackers saw a vehicle following them, two of the suspects abandoned Van Rooyen’s vehicle and fled into the bushes.

The guards stopped next to the vehicle where they found an unknown wounded man in the back seat. He had a gunshot wound to his head.”

Police were then called to the scene by the guards and the man was rushed to hospital where he passed away early the next morning.

Later, on the morning of May 12 the police found the body of Van Rooyen in an open field next to Soul City informal settlement along Tudor Road.

“He had also been shot in the head.”

Police in Kagiso have opened and are investigating two cases of murder.
