Attempted carjacking left man injured

A man was shot in the leg twice when he was on his way to a friend.

A man was shot in the leg twice during an attemped hijacking in Krugersdorp North on Thursday 3 September.

Police information indicates that the 38-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Polo was on his way to visit a friend when he noticed that a black Opel Corsa LDV was following him.

Captain Appel Ernst, a police spokesperson says at approximately 8.45pm he noticed that the driver was flashing lights at him. He turned into Second Street and pulled over.

“It is alleged that the two occupants in the Corsa LDV approached his vehicle and asked for directions. When the victim responded, one of the two males produced a firearm,” says Ernst.

“They demanded the key to the victim’s vehicle and a fight broke out between the victim and the two suspects.”

The armed suspect then fired two shots in the direction of the victim, hitting him in the leg both times.

“The suspects immediately fled the scene without the victim’s vehicle, since the victim’s car keys broke during the fight,” says Ernst.

“The victim also sustained injuries to his face. It is alleged that he was hit with an unknown object.”

Amoryn Golden, a NEWS journalist, reports that the paramedics of Netcare 911 were called to the scene where they stabilised the victim before they transported him to hospital.

The Krugersdorp South African Police Service (SAPS) are investigating a case of attempted murder and attempted carjacking.

Ernst says motorists are requested to be more cautious when they realise that they are being followed.

“It is suggested that they drive to a public place where there will be security or eyewitnesses.”
