Christmas party puts a sparkle in the eyes of the orphaned

Hundreds of hungry stomachs filled for Christmas.

Christmas came early for 250 orphaned children thanks to non-profit organisation Africa Food for Thought (AFFT).

Each year the organisation serves a group of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) by hosting a special Christmas event with an atmosphere compared to Christmas with a loving family.

This year’s Christmas party held at Community Ministries in Muldersdrift on 30 November brought Christmas joy to a record number of children who were sent home with special gifts and a full stomach.

Children were treated to a variety of activities, which included face painting, jumping castles and a KFC meal.

According to AFFT General Manager Claire Rosewarne the joy on a child’s face when receiving even a small Christmas gift reminds one how much the event means to the children.

“All the children come from severe impoverished backgrounds and their gratitude is stirring,” she says.

“Although after the party they return to sad realities at home, they take with them the memories and hope for a bright future.”

AFFT is run by volunteers who essentially focus on equipping and supplying school feeding programmes.

They are involved in a number of community projects, self-help/empowerment projects, shelters and half-way houses.
